What do we mean when we say, “Son of God”?
Please note: When the Bible says that Jesus is the Son of God, it doesn’t mean in a physical sense. God did not have a physical or sexual relationship with Mary. This idea is disgusting both to Muslims and Christians. The title “Son of God” means that Jesus is deity by nature. He is a Person of the One True God.
What is the evidence that Jesus is the Son of God?
First, the most important evidence is this. Jesus said He is God (Matthew 26:64). Many people have falsely repeated the idea that Jesus never claimed to be God. Perhaps you have heard this, or even said it yourself. Matthew 26:63-64 shows Jesus saying that He is the Son of God. The high priest commanded Jesus, “I adjure you by the living God, tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God.” (Matt 26:63 ESV). By saying this, the High Priest placed Jesus under an oath to tell the truth. Jesus answered, in effect, “I am, and you have said it with your own mouth.” Please read at the note on Matthew 26:64. In addition to this, God the Father said that Jesus is God by calling Jesus His Son. God spoke from heaven at Jesus’ baptism. God said, “…This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.” (Matthew 3:17 ESV). God the Holy Spirit declared Jesus to be the Son of God by raising Him from the dead (Romans 1:4).
Third, Jesus is God because He showed the characteristics of deity, Jesus knew all things. He knew the thoughts of the Pharisees (“omniscience,” Matthew 12:25). Only God knows a person’s thoughts (Ps 7:9). Several times Jesus said He would be with His followers all across the world. This would mean that He would be everywhere at once (or, “omnipresent,” Matthew 18:20; Matthew 28:20). Only God can be everywhere at once. In John 2:1–12, Jesus changed the basic nature of water and made it wine. How much power is needed to do that? Jesus is all powerful (omnipotent).
A fourth way we can see that Jesus is God is by noticing that Jesus did what only God can do. He forgave sins (Matthew 9:2; Luke 7:48). Jesus created. He created enough food to feed over 5000 people, showing that He is the Creator (Matthew 14:19-20). Jesus received worship. During His earthly life, people worshiped Jesus openly. If He had only been a prophet, He would have forced them to stop. Instead, he received their worship without rebuking the worshipers (Matthew 14:33; John 9:35–38; Matthew 28:9).
As we think about a fifth way of seeing that Jesus is God, can I ask you a question? What are the implications of His virgin birth? Here is my question to you: if Jesus does not have an earthly father, who is His Father? Mary was pregnant from the Holy Spirit (Matthew 1:18-20, 23).
I could continue giving you evidence, but you might get tired of reading! Before I finish, can I show you other people’s conclusions about Jesus? John the Baptizer prepared the way for the LORD (Matthew 3:2–3; quoting Isa 40:3 where “LORD” represents the personal name of God in translations). John said Jesus was the One he was sent to introduce (John 1:15). In Matthew 16:17 Peter, close friend of Jesus called Jesus “the Christ, the Son of the Living God.” The Roman soldier who was in charge of crucifying Jesus said “Truly this man was the Son of God” (Matthew 27:54)
As I finish writing this article I’m thinking about you. You are weighted down with how hard you have to work to do good works. You hope your good works are more than your bad works. But how do you know? Your sins are a constant weight on you. What if God said you could rest from now on and still enter Paradise? Would you want that? Only God can give you rest. Jesus said, “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”” (Matthew 11:28–30 ESV)
Jesus is truly God and He invites you to come to Him.
